This past week has been a pretty rough week for us. I think I mentioned in my last post that Liam had been waking up often at night again, but we'd just stick the pacifier back in and he'd go back out. Then it just got progressively worse this last week. All of a sudden he didn't want his pacifier to be "pacified" and he didn't eat as much from his bottles. He was also a bit more fussy at times (I started getting flashbacks from his first month!) than usual. At one point he had a fever of 102! We gave him Tylenol and it went down pretty quick. All that, in addition to the sleeping problems. OH!! And plus, he FINALLY learned how to roll over (from back to tummy... as shown in the videos I posted below). So there was A LOT of stuff going on.
Anyway, all of those symptoms (other than the rolling over) led me to believe that he had an ear infection. So we took him to the doctor on Wednesday to get him checked out. (He weighed in at 19lbs. 4.5oz, by the way) The doc checked his ears and said that they looked fine and he didn't have an infection. My motherly instincts failed me! haha But she did say that he could be teething, and is just uncomfortable. I also mentioned that he started rolling over and we still swaddle... and she suggested that we need to stop the swaddle now that he can move. Ugh...
The night after he first rolled over, he decided to practice in his sleep. He'd roll over immediately after we placed him on his back. So we were up multiple times that night to flip him over because he'd be crying on his belly. I think the second night (which was the night after the doc told us we shouldn't swaddle anymore), we tried to get him to go to sleep with his arms out of the swaddle, but he didn't settle too easily AND would roll over, so we gave in and swaddled him back up and it was pretty much a repeat of the prior night. At about 4am, he woke and I went in there and tried to get him to settle down and sleep on his tummy. I was in there for at least 30 minutes just patting and rubbing his back, trying to get him to calm down, but he would not stop crying! So I just threw in the towel and brought him to our bed to see if he'd sleep there with us, but he still wouldn't stop crying. I told Joel to get the carseat and we swaddled him back up and let him sleep in the carseat where he couldn't roll over. He finally fell asleep.
So after being sleep deprived and zombie-fied for the past couple nights, I decided to make an attempt at sleep training. He's old enough now and he sure needed it! The method we chose to try was the infamous Ferber method. It involves crying-it-out, but you still make an appearance at set time intervals to let your baby know that you aren't abandoning him. The first night, you wait 5 minutes, then go in for no longer than a minute to pat or console (no picking up), then leave. If he's still crying, you go in after 10 minutes and then return to him if he still hasn't stopped. This goes on to 15 minutes, then 20, and so on (up until 30 minutes) if he still won't sleep. The next night, you increase the intervals by 5 minutes (i.e. start at 10 minutes of crying). This teaches them how to self-soothe and fall sleep on their own.
The first night of this was torture. And it didn't help that we decided to end the swaddle cold turkey that night as well. Well, we still swaddled his lower half and just left his arms free. When we first put him down for the night at around 8pm, he didn't cry that long, so we didn't have to go in there. He slept until maybe 1am, where we went in and found him on his belly. This is when the fun started. I think we made it to a 20 minute interval, so it was a total of almost an hour of crying! But he FINALLY fell back asleep after that. And he woke up at his normal time.
The second night was like a dream... for us anyway. He went down EASY...no crying. And he didn't wake up at all! We did check him multiple times that night, though. He started on his back, then he was sleeping on his side for a while and then ended up on his belly. When Joel went to check him this morning, he was turned completely around 180 degrees on his belly. Crazy boy!
We also are trying this methods for naps now too. I hope I can get my grandma to go along with this. Like any great-grandma, she wanted to go right in and pick him up and rock him to sleep. It was probably torture for her to listen to his cries too! But we need to be consistent with this method for it to work.
So far, the swaddle-weaning and sleeping have been great! I really hope this sticks!!!
